Sybil Ludington… Interview with Director Kim Robinson

May 25th, 2011

Sybil Ludington Director Kim Robinson was recently interviewed about her heart, role and vision for the DVD that she wrote and directed.

FCM: How did God put this on your heart?

Kim Robinson: Amazingly, we had known for over seven years prior to filming Sybil Ludington that we were going to do films. We had been doing family television since 1994, our show KICKS Club airs over 30 times weekly on are around 15 networks. We had gone to Williamsburg, VA to do a special show series, “Elmer Goes to Williamsburg”, which sparked the ambers of passion I had buried for the revolutionary time period for me. I then started developing a curriculum for this series and ‘stumbled’ on the story of Sybil Ludington. The Lord immediately made it clear that He had brought her story before me to do a family film. I set it aside for five years. Then, five years later, one Sunday morning prior to church, the Lord spoke to me, “Just do it. It’s time to do Sybil Ludington.” That day I began writing the script. From that point, it was all through His leading, that within a few months we had a cast and a script in their hands. This step of faith for me has been a very personal experience with the Lord. To see Him take this movie which was simply something that He had spoken for me to do and gave me the ability to write, produce, and direct, is a testimony of His grace, power, and doing. I’m thankful for that and thankful to Him.

FamilyChristianMovies.com (FCM): Where was the film shot?

Kim Robinson: We shot the film in Ohio, at one of Ohio Historical Society’s locations called, Schoenbrunn Village, located in New Philadelphia, part of Ohio’s Amish Country. This village is Ohio’s first settlement, settled in 1772 by a Moravian Missionary, David Zeisberger. It was a unique set up and was perfect for what we needed. It gave us that ‘historical’ feel, which is what I wanted.

FCM: Why did you choose the location?

Kim Robinson: I wanted the lighting the village cabins would project. Using all natural lighting is important to me as a director. I felt the white walls and the size of them would give an overall feel for what I wanted to portray through the movie which was, warmth, home, family, and faith. The inside of these rooms had a look that we could capture as we creatively dressed the set with a flair to capture the story. The Director of Photography, my son, Tony Robinson and I, worked diligently together to capture the unique lighting I wanted. We used over 1,000 candles to capture the look.

FCM: What did you feel the location could do for the film?

Kim Robinson: I felt the location would give the ‘feel’ that Sybil’s home was much further away from the typical coast of New York, showing her home pressed more into its wooded areas. Her 40 mile ride was through heavy wooded territory as well as populated areas and I felt this location would produce that. I wanted the look that portrayed Colonel Ludington developed the land where they lived, which he did, and wanted to bring out how the Revolutionary War effected these areas and most importantly the personal lives and families who lived there. We also needed an area to bring Sybil’s ride to screen and this village was in the perfect country area of Ohio that I felt could bring this to pass.

FCM: Was there anything specific you had to do develop the film sets?

Kim Robinson: Yes, one thing we did have to do regularly was remove some of the things within the cabins that weren’t period acceptable and replace them with our own props such as, candelabras, candlesticks, candles, rugs, pewter, furniture, etc. We took pictures of these pieces and arrangements and put everything back in its exact spot. We were very specific to take precise precautions of the village items. The buildings were also located closely together giving us the ability to work the sets nicely but had the challenge to keep other buildings out of the shoot. We also had to work around and hide posts, as well as any other modern items. The cabins had no electricity which produced a challenge for any other form of lighting, causing us to use generators, which created other sound challenges. We also had the challenge of keeping traffic sounds and airport sounds out of the film. But, overcoming challenges is really what I feel makes shooting a film creative.

FCM: How long did it take to make the film?

Kim Robinson: We stepped out on this and determined to shoot the film in 17 days, using 3 days of those 17 as any rain or make up days. Miraculously, we finished our shoot in 14 days and had 3 days to close out any last minute decisions. The best way to describe it is, we walked through our shoot and took it ‘one day at a time’. We didn’t look at what was before us but simply at what was there to do at the moment. This is what helped us through it, especially when the challenge came to think it just couldn’t be done. That’s why preplanning and scheduling was vitally important to us. We had studied our schedule and went over it for months prior, and specifically laid it out. We pre-determined to schedule the shoot within that two week period. Once on site, we could take it one day at a time and move forward on the foundation we laid prior to getting there. This worked for us and we were blessed at how the Lord carried us through it but most importantly, His hand in making it happen.

FCM: Does the story of Sybil Ludington touch you personally?

Kim Robinson: Yes very much. I felt Sybil’s story was a message of courage and about embracing a moment in faith. In her story, I saw it that Sybil had to confront what was before her by moving forward through an action of courage founded in the strength of faith. I wrote a song about the movie that we as a ministry sang through the whole process which embraced us in the simple testimony for me personally about stepping out and writing/producing and directing the film itself. Courageously, I felt I was not only writing about her ride but inspired to take the ride the Lord had put before me. I felt that Sybil’s ride was a destiny the Lord had set before her to impact her country and it was His plan for us to tell her story on film and give Him the opportunity to use what we had done to reflect her story to impact others as well.

The song I wrote was based on the message I felt rooted in Sybil’s story itself. I saw it based from Psalm 91:1, which is quoted in the movie. It says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

The words to the song go;

“Under the shadow of Your wings, I will ride, and You will guide,

Under the shadow of Your wings, I will always go with You.

Your wings they cover me, on a ride that was meant to be,

Your wings they carry me, for a land destined to be free.”

I personally felt the Lord carried Sybil through her ride to impact this nation. I also felt this nation had/has a destiny designed by God to be free and is clearly rooted in Christian faith. I have felt personally through the making of Sybil Ludington the Lord was carrying us by the wind beneath His wings to bring out Sybil’s living example of faith and this country’s Godly roots and foundation, as well as exemplify the passion in the hearts founded in our history for freedom itself.

FCM: What vision did you have for the use of this film?

Kim Robinson: For me, stepping out and doing the movie was my first focus when I started. As I wrote it I wanted to impact the lives of youth and families with a message that unity and family devotion makes for great accomplishment. It has been my passion that its message impact youth and families to make the statement that everyone has “the courage to make a difference, the courage to stand, the courage to bring about change.”

It has been my vision and hope that the Lord will use Sybil Ludington like a pebble dropped in a pond, causing the rippling effect of the message to spread throughout this nation and impact with its message of faith, hope, and family.

As I have seen Sybil Ludington make it into the KidsFirst Film Festival, I was amazed. Then when it made one of the finalists for the festival, I was so honored. We were also extremely honored to be accepted as one of only eight feature films for the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival and to be named an honorable mention in the San Diego Christian Film Festival. Being chosen for distribution by Bridgestone Multimedia Group has taken Sybil Ludington further than I could have ever imagined. I’ve been awed by the Lord’s doing and inspired to continue doing historical and family films. The heart of our ministry and our efforts to step out have been touched and taken to places I never dreamed. We want to see Sybil Ludington and her inspiration of hope reach into homes, churches, families, schools, be inspirational family entertainment and mostly, into the hearts of people.

FCM: What were some of the greatest challenges in completing this film?

Kim Robinson: There are so many stories I could tell about with the amazing things the Lord did for us in doing this and how we overcame the challenges. But to share what I feel to be a couple of the greatest challenges, would be;

One, was about my desire to have a specific look and to get the ‘vista’ for the film with Sybil’s horse. We were up to one week prior to the shoot date but still did not have the vista location and to top that, we then began to have some real challenges in getting Sybil’s horse from Oklahoma to Ohio. We had to begin looking for another horse that close to the shoot dates and “finally” connected with Mike and Dawn Smitley who were just a few miles from our shoot location. Amazingly, Dawn not only was right there, she had the perfect horse for Sybil’s ride, and she and her husband generously opened up their land for the opener of the movie. They were an answer to prayer not only for the horse, but for the vista of the film. They were an amazing provision.

Secondly, the most challenging I feel was with creating the lighting for the ride, the rain, and the ride itself. We studied so many avenues for this and opted to not use day for night. We brought out generators, lights, and Sybil, with lots of water in spray bottles to get her wet. We had to create the storm, keep a fire in a cabin burning to keep her warm, and work with her over and over with the horse to create the ride. We used reflectors, fog machines, and ran the horse through tons of brush, trees, poison ivy, and fallen branches, all through the dark. It was a bit intense to say the least. We couldn’t start until dark, which Daylight savings time worked against us. We finally completed the ride around 2am. We took the footage, designed its color correction, sound effects and rain. It was an amazing accomplishment and what I feel was one of the greatest challenges and the greatest achievement of filming the movie itself.

Thank you Kim Robinson for such an open-hearted interview! Find Sybil Ludington at FamilyChristianMovies.com- Sybil Ludington

New Beginnings Home- A home for the beginning of a new life

October 7th, 2010

In light of Priscilla’s recent blog post highlighting “Sarah’s Choice“, here is an example of a ministry out there for woman who are making the choice to keep their child, despite being a single, sometimes homeless, sometimes a teenage, expecting mother.

Here is an interview conducted by Priscilla, FamilyChristianMovies.com staff member, with Kristal Bean, one of the staff at New Beginnings:

What is New Beginnings?

A maternity home and shelter for homeless pregnant woman.

What is your role there?

Staff assistant. I assist the house parents in running the home by performing miscellaneous tasks and engaging in relationships with the woman. I also do the administrative work. I am the missionary care coordinator, primary communications person. I do my best in each of these roles.

What made you decide to take on this role?

Well… God’s calling. When I was 17 God gave me the dream of helping pregnant woman by providing a home for them. And in February 2009 I learned about New Beginnings, and then applied to be on staff. I got an open door from the Lord and it was confirmed that that was what I was supposed to do.

In what ways do you see the Lord working there?

By providing a secure comfortable place for woman to live and develop healthy decision making and life skills. Also, by giving the woman a healthy distance between themselves and people who are not healthy for them so that they can evaluate their situation. By meeting their felt needs for prenatal care and donated items for their baby’s needs as well as informal counseling for their personal lives. And by giving the woman my perspective on the Lord’s character and His provision for them.

What are some challenges?

Brokenness in the woman’s lives that give them a skewed perception of life and inappropriate coping mechanisms. Lack of understanding of the Gospel and their need for Jesus.
My challenges are loving unconditionally, but holding boundaries that are good. Being willing to sacrifice personally to relate to these woman.
Also the distance from my family back home.

What needs or what ways do you think people could help in being a part of this ministry?

We’re a non-profit whose funds are provided by donations, so people could be a part of the ministry financially. Or donations of felt need items like baby items, maternity clothes, hygiene items, well running cars, etc. Or by volunteering at our large events throughout the year.

What Christian DVD has been useful in your ministry?

Fireproof has helped my ministry in showing what loving is and how unconditional love can be used by God to change people’s hearts. We recently watched To Save a Life too, and the stories in that DVD really related to the women who live in our home. I am looking forward to watching Sarah’s Choice, because I think that it would be really applicable to this ministry too.
Entertainment like DVDs, is a way for me to connect with the woman in the home and spend time with them.

Where could we learn more about your ministry?

www.newbeginningshome.org is our website. And if you would like to follow my blog, www.chasinglambs.blogspot.com, you can learn more in depth about what we do in the home for these woman, and what these women are going through.

Interview with Actress Colleen Ann Guest- Pray. and Pray 2: The Woods

April 29th, 2010
Colleen Ann Guest was the winner of one of our drawings for the fans on our Facebook page. Little did we know, Colleen is also one of the actresses in some of the DVDs that we provide on FamilyChristianMovies.com! So we decided to ask her a few questions about her work and experiences in the Christian Film industry!
As a Facebook fan of FamilyChristianMovies.com and the winner of our drawing for the 3 DVD Pray for Turkey Pack, you must enjoy Christian movies. What are a few of your favorites?
First of all I want to thank FamilyChristianMovies.com for everything you do. I am honored to have won the prize pack! I have three favorite movies currently and they are all independent films:
1 Paranormal by Cross Shadow Productions (http://www.paranormalthemovie.com/Pages/index.php)
2 Fatal Flaw by The Olsen Brothers (http://www.fatalflawmovie.com).
3 The Mysterious Islands by the Erwin Brothers (http://www.themysteriousislands.com).
I like films that share the Gospel that don’t appear preachy or patronizing; films that appeal to the unsaved rather than are just entertainment for the already saved. I understand the need for wholesome entertainment for those of us who are believers, but I really feel called to use my talents to evangelize and not just entertain and so I gravitate towards those films.

What was it like working on Christian films, Pray and Pray 2: The Woods?
Cross Shadow Productions is perhaps the BEST film crew I’ve ever worked with on so many levels. We PRAY together before and during the shoots, they are always fun and easy to work with (no diva attitudes!), and they LOVE good practical jokes. I like a good sense of humor on set…things can get tense when you’re on a tight schedule and the weather doesn’t cooperate or technical difficulties ensue. We have a GREAT time on set for sure!

What messages would you say are within the films? What will the viewers walk away with after watching these films?

I believe there are two main messages:
1. That we all need a savior who is Jesus Christ and
2. That we MUST communicate with him through prayer.
Praying is an integral part of our relationship with the Lord and it can literally save our lives! I sincerely hope that although the viewer may be entertained (and even scared or startled at times) they will see how some of the characters are carried through trials by their faith and prayers.

How would you say secular horror films are different than Christian horror films?

Well the most obvious difference is that there is no reference to the need for a Savior in a secular film. All the protagonists in secular horror films are credited for being “good” and their survival depends upon luck, skills they’ve acquired, and a complete belief in their own abilities. Overall though; there really aren’t enough Christian thrillers out there to compare with secular films in the genre. I grew up watching horror/thriller/sci-fi movies and I personally love them. The Bible is FILLED with thrilling scenes, horrifying images and downright scary moments. People love a good scare and I would like to see more films made in this genre with a Christian perspective and redeem this form of art for the Lord.

What age group or age groups would you suggest this film to? What kind of setting would be good for these groups to view this movie in?

I think I would suggest the films for the over 10 on up crowd with the emphasis on the middle school years. I really think having a youth group movie night including the Bible study provided would be a great way use the film - Maybe on Halloween weekend as an alternative to other activities. Discussion after viewing is an important part too. People pick up on different things and sharing their perspectives gives the viewers a chance to connect to each other and learn more about prayer and faith. There’s a lot of symbolism in the films. Have you noticed all the chains?? I believe the chains represent our bondage of sin and that with prayers we maintain our relationship with Christ who has broken that bondage for us. But the chains never really leave…they are always clanking all around us waiting for the next chance to bind us. Prayer isn’t a one time event – we need to pray without ceasing!

These films are based on true events, how does that affect the environment when making the film? How does it affect the message of the film?

It gives the films a sense of being grounded in reality. Not movie reality – our daily life reality. Just knowing there were real events surrounding the film makes the scary scenes scarier and the feelings of the characters more personal somehow. Whether Madison Preston is running for her life or praying for help, the scenes feel real.

Anything that you would like to add for the viewers?

As a sinner, I am eternally grateful (no pun intended!) that Christ sought me and bought me with his precious blood. My name is counted among believers and I know it’s not through any of my own doing that it got there. It’s been thrilling and encouraging for me to be a part of the Cross Shadow Productions team because they share the Gospel both on screen and off and they strive to live lives worthy of being called Christian. It’s been an honor and blessing to part of their family. I encourage everyone to rent, buy, or just watch their films and be sure to keep a watchful eye for the final thrilling conclusion to the Pray trilogy!

Interview with Pastor Ed about “The History of Christianity”

March 25th, 2010

Yesterday we shared a review of The History of Christianity from  a Pastor in Indiana who viewed it in his Sunday night meetings.  We asked him a few questions about it and this is what he had to share.

Ed, tell us a little about the church you pastor.  How would you describe your church in three sentences?

Our church is Bible-centered and Bible-content driven. We put an emphasis on the Jewish roots of our faith, including a Psalm 1 approach toward growth. We are involved with missions and selective in accepting or rejecting new approaches.

Do you and your family watch many Christian DVDs, Which are your favorites?

Not many except The Jesus film and Veggie Tales. We tend to learn via reading or listening.

What was the makeup of your Sunday night groups? (age, prior knowledge of Christian History, size?)

During the series, we ran around 25, mostly middle or younger adults. Our evening participation is usually pretty small, and this was actually better than usual (many of these were parents whose children were involved in our youth group or kids’ club meeting at the same time).  A few of them knew a little about church history, most knew almost nothing.  I have used the video portion for my adult Sunday School class when I was away. It was during a quarter when we were not using curriculum and the material I was teaching was self-developed and specialized (Jewish Roots).

What did the group members get out of the study?

For many, it was their first exposure to church history. We had used some other videos over the years: Wycliffe, Hus, Luther, Komensky, First Fruits, Calvin, etc.,  but the “forest” picture was missing.  And that is the strength of this series, it helps paint a picture of the forest.  It is very brief, so I played only half of a segment at a time and then added information.   This held the attention of our folks, even those who were not into history.  The brevity of the series made it ideal for the easily intimidated, and people were left wanting more.

I know that church leaders will often study Church history for a sense of context, encouragement, direction, mentoring and personal enrichment.  In your mind, what is the value of having lay-people study church history?

The value, IMO, is not so much personal spiritual growth. The value is in understanding where the various denominations came from and removing some of the mystery of Christendom at large. Part of serving the Lord means using the mind, and seeing the big picture (historically) helps us do this.

Dispelling ignorance is a good thing.

What would you advise to a Sunday School teacher or small group leader who is preparing to use this series in their class?

I think such a teacher needs to understand more than the video itself teaches; even an extremely broad overview of church history (like this) will raise many questions.  Reading through a book like Christianity Through the Centuries by Earle Cairns would be good prep.  But the teacher must be careful not to fall into the trap of TMI — Too much information.  The teacher who prepares by reading such a book must resist the TMI temptation, for it will be strong. The maximum discussion and additional material should not be more than twice the video length, and it should be a combo of lecture AND discussion, targeting the major, not detail.

And the teacher probably needs to know some basic apologetical questions, like, “With all the varieties in Christendom, how do we know our viewpoints are correct?”  ”What is the final authority in matters of faith and practice?”  Additionally, the teacher needs to be doctrinally grounded and should understand the hypostatic union, the Trinity, and the issues of the Reformation, for example.  Since many church divisions arose over doctrinal issues, the teacher needs to be fluent in those issues.

Thanks for your thoughts Pastor Ed!  You can learn more about Rev. Vasicek’s church and read some of his articles at http://www.highlandpc.com/

Bella: A Pro-Life Movie You Should See

March 30th, 2009

I came across John’s blog a few weeks ago. He was very impressed with one of our films, Bella. You can check out his article here. I haven’t gotten a watch Bella yet, so I thought I’d pick his brain a little to see what he loved so much.

John, you seemed to absolutely LOVE Bella. Without giving away too much of the plot, could you explain an image or a scene in the film that really impacted you?

The opening scene grabbed my wife and I right away. The main character was sitting on the beach watching a young girl play on the beach but he was somber as he watched her. We were immediately drawn to the burden he was carrying.

What drew you to this film in the first place?

I had heard it was another pro-life movie among several that had come out recently. So I put it on my to-watch list and forgot about it. I wish I had moved it to the top of my queue earlier.

Now, if I understand correctly, this isn’t an expressly Christian film. What do you think draws Christians to this film?

It is expressly Christian without being an uncreative Afterschool Special. The main character is a Christ figure who has the long hair and beard of what we typically picture Jesus looking like. The images are abundant in the movie without sermons. It lives the gospel without telling it.

Was there a specific way that God spoke to YOU through this film?

It got us thinking about adoption as another way to fight abortion. But we haven’t moved past the thinking stage.

Finally, John, would you tell us a little about yourself and why someone might want to visit your blog?

As it says in my sidebar, I’m a Christian father of three who helps my wonderful wife homeschool out three children when I’m not at work practicing biology in a pharmaceutical company. I’m average. But I see so many lies and misrepresentations of Jesus and the church and I needed a place to share my frustrations and offer solutions. The UmBlog is where I comment on the church, the world, and their interaction. Cinema and literature reviews are some ways I do that. I also look at the church’s interaction with the world through history. Our culture of death deeply concerns me so I frequently write about pro-life issues as well. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for your thoughts John. Don’t forget to visit his blog to read the rest of his thoughts on Bella.

You are welcome

You can watch the trailer for Bella here.
