The Story of the English Bible - DVD

Scholars have given their lives for it, dreamed for it to be accessible to the common man and eventually would give us the legace of the English Bible.  From Erasmus to Wycliffe to Gutenberg, listen to the scholars and academics document the greatest stories in church history.

The Story of the English Bible is one of the great adventures of the last millennium. It’s hard to fathom that a book, which is an all time best-seller, was barely known five hundred years ago.

There were valid reasons for this. The medieval church, which controlled every avenue of individual life, didn’t want it. The printing press, which had yet to be invented, precluded it.

Then came the Renaissance and the thirst for knowledge. Scholars found new light in ancient manuscripts. One of these scholars, Erasmus, compiled a Greek New Testament. Other scholars read it and were converted.

Erasmus said he would like to hear the farmer singing snatches of scripture at his plough .. and the weaver humming phrases of scripture to the tune of his shuttle.”

Others agreed and some began the work of translation into English.

Chief of these was William Tyndale, a brilliant scholar and a tireless labourer. His translation became the basis for all English translations for almost three hundred years.

Like so many others he eventually sacrificed his life in the cause of truth, but not before he had bequeathed to us a legacy far greater than gold.

This presentation highlights the contributions of Wycliffe, Huss, Erasmus, Gutenberg, and Tyndale.

Drawing on the expertise of scholars and academics from Europe and North America it documents one of the most important stories in English history.

  1. The Story of the English Bible- DVD

This DVD shows how far God will let man wander off from God’s way before pulling mankind back and the price extracted. This story is as big as the Cain and Abel story; or the flood and great exiles of the Jews; and bigger that the Job or David story. It is only topped by the story of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus.Review by DLangford
